Hello Rocky Fork Lake Friends,
I’m not sure about you, but I’m very excited to put this past winter behind us and welcome warmer days ahead.
As we transition into spring, I wanted to take a moment to share some important safety reminders regarding open burning and general fire prevention to help prevent avoidable incidents in our community.
Open Burning Awareness
Indiana law generally prohibits open burning, but certain activities are allowed under specific conditions. Even when permitted, you must follow all state rules and any active burn bans. I have provided this link that will provide more details, https://www.in.gov/
Key reminders:
- Only burn clean wood, paper, or charcoal — never trash
- Fires must be attended at all times
- Keep water or extinguishing tools nearby
- Avoid burning during high winds or poor air quality
- Fully extinguish fires when complete
Property Maintenance & Fire Behavior
Many lake homes are located on inclines, which significantly impacts how fire behaves.
- Fire spreads faster and burns more intensely uphill
- When combined with wind, fire growth can increase rapidly
We often see leaves and debris accumulated around decks, skirting, and overhangs. This creates a direct path for fire to reach your home.
Please keep leaves, brush, and other combustible materials cleared away from your structure—especially around decks and foundations.
This simple step can dramatically reduce the risk of fire impingement and structural loss.
Campfires & Hot Material Safety
- Always fully extinguish campfires when finished
- Never leave fires unattended
- Do not dump hot coals or ashes on the ground
Hot coals from wood stoves or charcoal grills can retain heat for several days and may easily ignite surrounding materials.
Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a lid, placed on a non-combustible surface, well away from structures.
Contractors & Property Work
We know many of you have contractors out doing work this time of year—tree trimming, cleanup, construction, and more.
Just a reminder, as the property owner, you are ultimately responsible for what happens on your property.
Please take a moment to make sure anyone working for you understands:
- Local and state burning rules
- What can and cannot be burned
- When burning is not allowed due to weather or bans
A quick conversation up front can prevent a situation that gets out of hand quickly.
What is Always Illegal
- Burning household trash, construction debris, or dumped waste
- Burning treated or painted wood
- Allowing unsafe accumulations of combustible materials
Good Practices
- Be mindful of smoke affecting neighbors
- Check for local burn bans before burning
- Use caution during windy or dry conditions (preferably do not burn)
- Contact your local fire department if you have questions or concerns
